THE RAILWAY MUDDLE.
Tho Manager of the New, Zealand Railways Iras made a desperate attempt to explain away the muddle into which the railways have got. His series of excuses will deceive no">ody. There has been evidence on-all hands during the past few years that our railways have been mismanaged in a most shocking manner. The bungling has continued until now, when tho Department has collapsed. Tho coal shortage is simply an excuse for this bungling—and a very poor excuse at that. Is it not a fact that the rolling stock has been allowed to get into such a/state of disrepair that it is unsafe to use a considerable quantity of it? The apologists for the Government are, of course, doing their best to excuse the Lepartment, but their camouflage can easily be seethrough. No one but a lamentably ignorant man, or one who expects some crumbs from the Government's political table, would stand up and attempt to defend thq Department over the present muddle. After hearing these individuals, and perusing the Railway Manager's statement in connection with the railway collapse, Cabinet Ministers might well exclaim, "Oh, save us from our friends."
