FIRE INSURANCE PREMIUMS.
The Master! on Fire Board has called on the borough of Mastortou to contribute £725 10s towards the cost of lire protection in Masterton. The town of Mastort on lias one of the best lire services in New Zealand, yet its fire premiums are among tho highest. What is ihe reason for this: , Masterton has been practically free from tires for many years past, yet there is no movement bom,.- made by the insurance companies io reduce the premiums paid. The insurance companies are slowly destroying; the goose that lays the golden egg. The farmers aro combining to cover their own. insurance. Local bodies and private firms will be. forced into the same position shortly. Various local bodies in Masterton have made representations to secure a reduction in the premium rates, but without success. Further appeals in the same direction would probably moot ! with the same fate. Therefore, the i question for consideration in the near future is that of local bodies and private Jirms following in the steps of the farmers and providI ing their own insurance covering.
