THE MOTOR HOG.

On several occasions we have comment- j ed on the reckless driving of motor ears in Masterton. Cars pass through Queen and other streets in. Masterton at a speed dangerous to life and limb, while they sweep round corners at a, rate which scatters the traffic in all directions. Are the police powerless to act in the matter? The police may complain that when they secure- a. conviction of one of these motor hogs he escapes with a line of 5s or 10s. It is an absurd farce to fine an offender 10s for driving his motor car at a high rate of speed. It is equally a. farce to find only a few of these motor hogs brought, before the court. "Why is this so? There are dozens of motorists who break the by-laws every day in Masterton. Why are they not brought before the court? Then, again, is there no by-law or police regulation against the ttse of glaring head-lights at night? Every day in Masterton accidents are narrowly averted through tho reckless driving of motorists who are under the impression that they own the roadway and all in it. The motor hog must bo made to feel his responsibility, and it is the duty of the magistrate to support the police when a case is proved by inflicting the highest penalty the law allows. To impose fines of f>s or ]0s is to make a .-joke of a very serious business.
