LANSDOWNE DRAINAGE.

(To the Editor.----j-'ir,—Ah a, resident; of Lansdowne, i may I a.sk lor your advocacy for the benefit of the health of this growing , Masterton suburb, primarily, and incidentally for the boroi'gh's welfare? The indifference and neglect of the County Council of the vital n<.ed of drainage and sanitation in this populous suburb constitutes a menace to the whole community. The recent agitation for a. public park for Lansdowne will have to bo enlarged to include a public cemetery unless the Public .Health Department will shako up the local authority, or take the matter in hand themM|N"es at once. We are dependent for drai3ag& on so-called septic tanks —in other words, cess-pits-—in a stiff clay formation, where there can be no aoakage or escape for disease-germ breeding, fermenting beds. If in the coming winter there is another outbreak of the influenza epidemic, pneumonic typhoid, or whatover plague the fr-tal disease be called, there will be ready at Lansdowne a happy hunting-ground for all the germs. I don't know whether tho County Council, the Hospital Board, or the Public Health Department is primarily responsible, no proper nuisance inspection apparently ia made, and no attempt to safeguard tho health of this part of the district. Here is an opening for the Progressive League- and the press.—l am, etc., A. J. BEOWN.
