THE SOISSONS-RHEIMS FRONT.

The cables to-day suggest that on the front between fcioissons and Eheims there has undoubtedly been very heavy fighting, and nothing has occurred to change the view that the enemy is holding on to territory with a stubbornness characteristic of tho German. The Allied artillery and airmen are combining to make this enemy saiient a very unhealthy region, and as his base and' road centres within the are formed by his front between Rheiras and Soissona are limited, they are receiving particular attention at the present" time. It is very doubtful whether the neck of the salient is as narrow as some war correspondents have suggested. While continued Allied progress in the region south of, Soissons and west of Kheims would eventually achieve the desired result and render practically the whole salient untenable, this is not yet iv sight. We may bo sure that Germany will not effect a withdrawal in this region unless her only alternative is to suffer a serious defeat, and the isolation of a considerable section of her forces. So far Germany has only slowly withdrawn her troops from a portion of the salient; whether she will draw back altogether yet remains to be seen.
