A STREET BRAWL.
TROOPERS IN EVIDENCE.

There was a regrettable occurrences in tho city on Saturday night, when, ' through the stupid conduct of two members of tho roinforcomorits encamped at Trontham, a serious brawl took place in Manners street. Just before 10 o'clock Constablo Dovino, of the Manners Street station, arrested a trooper namod Jas. John Clayton for being drunk and disor- j dorly. Tho arrest took placo near Everybody's Theatre, and a crowd quicVcollected. Amongst theso men was a trooper in plain clothes, named Robert Brown, and ho is allogod to havo been foremost in tho attempt to interfere with tht» arrest. Constable Thorn, in plain clothes, was at hand, and when ho, in turn, arrested Brown, thoro waa an ugly doinonstration. Tho struggle to arrest both men was a lively affair, in which the crowd took sides, mostly against tho police. Matters wero made much worse through a number of women and children being enclosed in tho crush, and tho proceed ings wore of a very mixed character for somo Ttninutes. Moro police arrived from tho stations about the city, and oventually tho two offenders were got away to Lambton Quay station. 'Several constables were mauled badly, but not injured. The two troopers will have to answer charges to-morrow morning of having damaged uniforms as well as charges of assault and resisted tho police. t
