PROPOSED NEW STREETS.
CR. WINZENBERG'S PROPOSAL. At the Borough Council meeting lanfc night, Cr. Winzenberg moved: "That the engineer be requested to bring up n report to the following regular meeting of the Council on the probable cost of acquiring the land necessary to form; connecting streets between Pine, Cole, Essex, Renall and Cornwall Streets, about midway between Chapel and Pownall streets; Pownall street to Railway Station Reserve; Queen Street to Chapel street; and Church street or Bannister street to River road."
' In speaking to his motion, Cr. WinI zenberg said that it was a bail tiling for ■. any town to have too large block? of kuul. It would be better and cheaper to secure the laud now than later on when buildings were erected thereon. New streets were necessary for the purpose (f better access for delivery of goods, lire-fighting purposes, etc. It \vas now the time to secure this land, even if it were not used. The Council vshould not give any fancy price. There should be no sentiment 4 n the matter, and, if not able to get the land otherwise they should take it under the Public Works Act In regard to the connection between Queen, aud Chapel Streets, there would in time be a big population on the Upper :wd considerable traffic would be fortfe-Jhf coming into Queen street, via the nai , row Perry Street. ~ A quick outlet oa the Avest side was required from Queen street for fine purposes. At the present time the outlet from Queen street to Chapel street, through Mr Ogilvy'e - premises was largely us d by the gen-'----eral public, and by drivers of vehicles. Cr. Winzenberg also spoke stronglj i» .?.<•■■ support of the other connecting links' as recommended by him. Cr. O'Leary seconded the motioe, which was carried.
