STEAMSHIP SERVICE INADEQUATE.

(Received Thursday, at 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, Wednesday.

Before the Dominions Commission, Mr Austin of the Hull and Barnesley railway, who recently toured Australia and New Zealand, advocated a regular steamship service for developing new markets. He recommended a moderate subsidy from the overseas Dominions for at least a year until the service became self-supporting.

Mr Ross Johnson, general manager of the Port of Bristol, testified to the inadequacy of the steamship service to Australia and New Zealand, adding that New Zealand and other overseas countries asked for better facilities for trading with the large area directly served through Bristol.

Three Blue Books of the minutes of evidence taken by the Dominions Commission in Australia and New Zealand have been issued. Six hundred and sixty-two pages aro devoted to the Commonwealth, and 233 to New Zealand.
