OBITUARY.
SIR WILLIAM RUSSELL, M.L.C

The death occurred at his home at Flaxmere, near Hastings, shortly aftor midnight, of Sir William Kussell, M.L.C.' The late Sir William Kussell, who had been ailing for some weeks past in Wellington, returned to his home at Flaxmere only a few days ;.go. His condition on Saturday last was reported to be serious, but few expected that his ond was so near. The deceased was born at Sandhurst, Berkshire (England) on November 12th, 1838, aud was thus seventy-five years of age. He was a son of Colonel Andrew Hamilton Kussell. He was educated at the Koyal Military College at Sandhurst, and joined the sSth Regiment in England in 1855. In 1857 he joined tho headquarters of the Regiment hi New Zealand, returning to England in ISSS. He came to New Zealand again with the 14th Kegiment in 1801. He retired from the Army in 1862, and settled in Hawke's Bay.* He entered the Provincial Council*o.t Hawke's Bay in 1869, and remained a member until the disso-lution--of the Provinces. He was elec-. ted M.H.K. for Napier in 1875, and was defeated in ISSI by Mr F. Sutton. He was re-elected for Hawke's Bay in 18S3, and represented that constituency until he was defeated by Mr F. Dillon in 1905. He was Postmaster-General in ISS4, and Colonial Secretary and Minister of Justice and Defence ISS9-91. He represented New Zealand at the Federal Conference in Melbourne in IS9O, and attended the Federation Convention at Sydney in IS9I. He had been a member of the Hawke 's Bay Education Board, Hawke's Bay County Council, Hospital Board, etc. He was a prominent member of the Hawke's Bay Racing Club and at one time, owned a number of racehorses. He was married in 1867, aud leaves a widow aud family. He had resided in England for several years of late, and was appointed to the Legislative Council only a month or two back.
