VERY FIRM TONE.
SPLENDID COMPETITION,
Press Association—Electric Telerraph— Copyricht. LONDON, Wednesday. The wool sales have opened. There is a very firm tone. Five thousand and sixty-eight bales of Australian, 1821 of New Zealand, and 180 of South African were offered. There was a fairly representative selection, and a large attendance from all quarters. There was splendid competition. Merinos were five per cent, higher, and crossbreds were slightly in sellers' favour. Low crossbreds barely maintained their position. Shabbier and coarse crossbreds were five per cent, below the December famine prices.
