ENGLISH UMPIRES.

AND MAYNE'S CRITICISMS.

SOME ADVERSE COMMENT

LONDON, Wednesday

The Manchester Guardian says it is useless to answer E. E. Mayne's complaint against the English cricket umpires. If cricketers begin questioning umpires they will soon got back to the manners of village green cricket. Mayne's criticisms were not cricket. The Australian correspondent of the Pall Mall Gazette regrets the attack made on English umpires. There had been similar experiences in Australia. It was generally conceded that the decision given against Warren Bardsl y in the test match was an error, but it did not affect the result of the match. The Mayno incident shows what a thoroughly unhappy band the team was. It was unfair to saddle the Board of Control with all the responsibility, but its policy had not uplifted Australian cricket. Not since the notorious tour of 1893 has the Australians' reputation been at so low a standard.
