TO NEW COUNCILLORS,

At the first meeting last night of the newly elected Masterton Borougli Council, His Worship the Mayor (Mr J M. Coradine) congratulated tbe | Councillors who bad been re-elected i on having the continued confidence of the public, aud the uew members upon having secured their seat-, Hie speaker said he had only one regret, and that was that all the chairs were not filled, Cr Elliott beiug on a bed of sickness, aud he was sure all would -join in the regret he felt. The Mayor explained that the position of a Oouucii was a very responsible one. The most important thing was always to keep tne mind on the point that they were there to do their best in the interests of the neople. Many different opinions were sometimes expressed at the meetings, but each councillor should vote on every question in the way in which he considered to be right. Each councillor must give the others credit of doing the best they could for the town. A most important thing was that the Councillors should have a clear view of a matter before voting. Or O'Leary said his desire was to forward the interests of the town and ratepayers—particularly the latter. He had no doubt that with Mr Coradine at the head of affairs the best things would be done. Cr O'Leary wished the Mayor a Happy and prosperous term of office. Cr Temple, as au old Councillor, congratulated Mr Coradine on being returned unopposed. He felt sorry that Mr Morris had beeu unseated. He was confident that Mr Donald, who filled his chair, would do well it he aspired to the mark of Or Morris, who did good work while ou the Council. Cr Temple extended a hearty welcome to the new councillors. They would urobabiy get many hard hits inside rhe Chamber,but the Councillors were always the best of friends after the meetings

Cr Hoar also welcomed the new Councillors, stating that he was sure they would all get on amicably. Cr Candy thanked the Mayor aud Councillors for their hearty welcome, and expressed the hope that he would be enabled to do good work under Mr Coradiue's guidance.

Cr Donald said that ho was very thankful tor the welcome extended to him, and he hoped that his term of office would be a useful one. Cr Ewitigtou thanked the Mayor for the words he had spoken about the oil Councillors. He was very pleased to see Mr Coradine returned to the Mayoral chair. With regard to the new Councillors, tie felt sure that they were fully worthy of their positions Cr Ewington was gratified to note that Cr Temple had made reference to Mr Morris. He was a man who had done good service to the town, and he was sorry to see he had been defeated. Cr Prentice said be would do all in his power to assist the Mayor, but he would also oppose him when he (the speaker), thought he was wrong. He was glad to see there was new blcod in the Council.

Cr Pragnell congratulated the Mayor on having been returned, and he "said that there was no mau in Masterton more deserving of such a compliment. He was of opinion that the electors had made a good selection of Councillors. His Worship the Mayor thanked the Councillors for their kind words. He also expressed regret at the defeat of Mr Morris. He moved "That this Council appreciates the services of Mr Motris on the Couucil, and hopes to see him at seme future date returned again to office. " Cr Temple seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
