BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The first meeting of the newlyelected Mastertou Borough Council was heid iv the Council Chambers i.a*t evening, there being present —His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. _._. Coradine), Crs A. Donald, J. P. Prentice, J. C. Ewiugton, W. Pragnell, W. Candy, T. G Hoar, F, W. Temple a and H. J. O'Leary. » The usual declaration w..« taken by tiie Mayor and ail the Councillors. On the motion of Or Temple, seconded by Or Pragnell, it was resolved to meet every four weeks as a Council meeting, the first meeting to be on Tuesday next, May 9th. The Mayor stated that last year rhe result of the Council meeting as a Committee of die whole had been very successful, in that it had given Councillors au opportunity ot obtaining a thorough insight into all sections of the business. The question remained with tne Councillors whether the same course would be pursued during the ensuing year. -Mr Prentice moved that tho old system be adopted. Or Pragnell seconded the motion. He said he had experienced the result when several committees had been formed, and had been the cause of bitter wrangliugs when reports were put forward for adoption. Cr Temple said the conditions were such that- the Council as a whole committee would be the best course. Cr Donald asked if the report of the committee, when brought before the ordinary meeting, could be reopened aud amended. The Mayor said chat such could be done, but it was very seldom necessary, as the matters' contained in the report had generally been favoured by the majority.

Cr Kwingtou stated that he felt sure it would be advisable to set up :-■•

Cr 'hlwington moved as an amendment that .wo committees be appointed, one a Park Committee and the other a committee to conduct tho general business. Cr Hoar opposed the .-.f-ttiug up of a Park Couimitvee, but he would favour a works and finance counnitfee.

Jfc* O'Leary supported 'lie motion, wished to be en ail the committees so as t''i understand the whole business of the Council.

The amendment was uot seconded and the motion was earned.
