ACCIDENT ON RIMUTAKA.

The gale, blowing on the Rimutakas yesterday, was responsible for a somewhat serious accident which might easily have beeu fatal, although fortunately no oue was seriously injured. A motor car, owned by Mr J. 0. Ewiugton, was beiug driven over the Rimutaka incline by Mr H. Flaws, Mr Kavauagh being the only other occupant of the car. A terrific wind was blowing at the time aud the ascent was made with extreme difficulty. On reaching the Summit Mr Flaws left the car in order to get a piece of wood to steady it while he made some slight repairs. Mr Kavauagh decided to walk some little way down the mil aud wait for the cay.

Flaws had only gone a few yards when the brakes lifted aud the car went off down tha iuclius, Flaws rushed up and scrambled over the back of the car to the steering wheel and was successful iv keeping the car to the road for a considerable distance, and all would have beeu well hart not the rough jolting of the car broken the steering gear,& the car dashed over the embankment dropping about sixteeu feet. Flaws had a miraculous escape "the car falliug ou him, but in such a mauuer that he escaped injury, receiving only a few bruises and small cnts. Tne oar was badly damaged. It will, however, be in use again in a few days. This is the third accident withiu a very short period in which Mr Ewingtou has had his motor cars damaged, one on the Railway crossing,one on the Northern Approach, the above mentioned accident making the tliird.
