CARTERTON

Mr and Mrs Samuel Greatbatch and family, from Duuediu, arrived in Carbertou jesterday on a holiday visit. Mr Greatbatch is well-known locally, having been at one time clerk at the railway station.

A aaored concert is being arranged by the local Methodists, to be given in the Church in about a mouth's time. The funds will be devoted to the Church.

Mr Walter Campbell, of Marton, is at present on a holiday visit to Cartertou. Mr Campbell for a number of years was a resident here, and was exceedingly popular. He was secretary of the Fire Brigade, and helped in a, large measure to secure the erection of the beautiful new station that vow houses the appliances, and also rendered good service in the raising of funds for the town clock. Mr Campbell was, besides, secretary to the Liberal Association of Wairarapa, and has many friends, who are pleased to see him in Carterton for a few days.

Misses P. Mansfield, S. Chapman (Oartorton) and P. Asliton (Daleiield), members of the ladies' hockey team from the Wairarapa that will take part in the Nelson tournament, left yesterday with the other members of the team fortho south.

The Wairarapa representative football team, who suffered defeat at Napier on Saturday in the match against Hawke's Bay, returned home yesterday afternoon. They report having had a very pleasant trip.

Mrs Gaudar, wife of Mr Walter Gaudar, of High-street, Carterton, who has been seriously ill in Dr Smyth's private hospital, has recovered sufficiently to return to her home.

Boisterous weather has been experienced in the district since Saturday, and it is expected that the mortality amoug young lambs will be heavy.

Ifc is anticipated that the new Oarnugtou Cheese Factory will be ready for operations next month.

A number of Carterton skaters visited the carnival ac Mastertou last evening. Some excellent skaters reside in tliis part of the district.

Mr B. Wadhaiu is having a couple of sample rooms erected ou the section which lie recently acquired in Broadway. The town at present is very badly supplied as regards sample rooms, and the complaints from travellers in this respect are numerous. It not infrequently happens that the samples accommodation is inadequate to meet the requirements of all the travellers who happen to be visiting the town. Mr Wadham's enterprise, therefore, fills a long-felt want.

In the Police Court, Oartertou, yesterday, before Mr J. A. Dudson, J P., an inebna.ro estreatod iiis bail of H)s, and had a conviction recorded against him. The officers of the law had discovered the oifouder ou Saturday night, helplessly drunk, with over £7 iv his possession. The night was particularly wet, and his temporary incarceration was perhaps the best thing that could have happened to him.

Mr W. M. liaJley, acting ou behalf of the licensed victuallers of Wairarapn, lias presented the P. and A. Society with a handsome solid silver challenge cup, for points competition in the cheeso classes. The trophy is now on view in the window of Messrs H. Keltic and Co.'s promises.

Mr S. Crauch, of Belvedere, who recently sold his farm to Mr E. Eagle, ;juur., has acquired a property at Te Arolia, iv thu Auckland district. Mr Crauch and family departed ou Saturday for their now home, carrying with them the best wishes of a large circle of friends.

Among those who will take part in the Catholic concert ou Thursday evening next will be Mr Barnard. This young gentleman, who possesses a iine baritone voice, is the latest acquisition to the ranks of (Jartertou vocalists. His songs on Thursday evening will be "Iv the Cathedral" (d'Chauuett) and "Lot Me Love Thee" (Ai'diti).

The Cartertcu Salvation Army Corps —a particularly live body—has arranged a fireside meeting for tomorrow evening. Since Adjutant Cook has been iv charge tno local Corps has made excellent progress.

Mrs Bartlett, of Richmond-road, who lias been away for a number of weeks, seeking renewed health, has returned home much benefited by the trip.

A large number oC invitations have been issued, ami it is fully expocted that there will be a record gathering of lovers of the rhythmic art. Music will be supplied by Mr Reihaua Boyes' orchestra, from Mastertou. Three medals, given by supporters of the Club, are to be presented during the evening. Mr 11. Cooper, the energetic secretary, and his committee of willing workers Jiave arrangements well in hand, and are leaving no stone uuturned to make the function the success that has been its reputation in the past. It is to be hoped that tho woather will be of a more favourable description than that experienced duriug tlie last day or two. The Social Club held another of its pleasant entertainments ju trie Hall lasit Friday evening. Dancing was indulged in, tho music being supplied by Mr A. G. Masou. Hobentou, "A Country Squire"; Mr Tunnycliffe, "Alaska" ; Mr Harry Mason, "A Day at the Boiling-downs." After a very successful season, the members of the Club intend to bring the series of entertainments to a close ou September Kith with a social and dance. A meeting of the Men's Society was held in the Hall on Thursday evening last. Tlie subject for die evening was a very interesting paper by the Rev. L, Thompson on "Samson." The function lias been organised to assist the bazaar funds of St. Mark's Church, Carterton, and the promoters are hoping to have a nice little sum to hand over for that purpose. Socials in Parkvale are always popular functions. GREYTOWN. Mr A. H. Walhs, tha contractor for removing the old wooden portion of tho South Wairarapa Hospital, is making capital progress with the work.
