NEW ZEALAND PRODUCTS
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE
The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, Octooer 30th :—
The mutton market is very quiet, and speoulative buying has apparentlyended. Buyers are not iucliued to make forward purchases at present prices, but stocks of muttou ou hand are light, and are firmly held in a few hands. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4, per lb, and North Island 4} 4 'd. Mutton has only reached present prices on oue •occasion since February, 1907.
The lamb market is quiet, aud there is a dull sale for all lamb. The average price to-day for Canterbury brands is 4%d per lb, aud North Island 4>Ai per lb.
The beef market is steady. The average price to-day for New Zealand hindquarters is 3%d per lb, aud forequarters 3d per lb.
The butter market is firm for best quality, but the high price restricts the demand. Buyers of butter are holding back, expecting prices to go lower. Price of choicest New Zealaud butter to-day is 117s par cwt; Argentine, 116s; Australian, 115?; Danish, 1275; aud Siberian. 106s.
The cheese market is dull, aud there is only a small demand. Average price of finest New Zealaud cheese to-
day is 56s per cwt
The hemp market is quiet but steady. New Zealand good fair, on spot per ton, £27 10s; New Zealand fair grade, ou spot per ton, £26 10s ; fair current Manila ou spot, per ton, £26. January-March shipment, New Zealand good fair, per ton £27; New Zealaud fair grade, per ton £2(5; fair current Manila, per ton £25 10s. Manila output, 33,0.0 bales.
The cocksfoot seed market is firm, and there are light stocks ou baud. The average price for bright cieau New Zealand cooksfoot seed weighing 171b per bushel on spot is 70s per cwt.
The hop market is firm, and prices continue to advance.
The kauri gum market is firm, with more enquiry. Stock, 302 tons. Ordinary to fair three-quarter scraped, 170s; fair half-scraped, 105s; brown lair half to three-quarter scraped, 90s; brown pickings common to good. 42s (id ; bush fair to good pale and amber scraped, 150s.
