WELLINGTON BENEVOLENT TRUSTEES.
A MASTERTON APPLICANT
QAof the most conspicuous feaitnrHrof the Wellington Beu.volent Trustees' weekly meetings iv the disposal of the applications for relief, is •the gentleness with which each case is haudled, but the board had a difficult case to deal with yesterday, when a rough-looking, sun-burned applicant came before them "to know what they were going to do with .him." "I have come down from Masterton ill," he said. "I slept out Iv the Basin Reserve last night. What are you going to do with me?" He also said he had beeu to the Hospital and had got some medicine; but was aiot admitted for treatment. "Where is the medicine?" asked the chairmau .(Rev. W. A. Evans). "Oh, I can't carry an apothecary's shop in my pocket. I waut to know what yon aro going to do. I'll sleep out to-night— here, in the main street, unless you help me, and that will rebound ou » you" "Oh, dear no, it will do nothing of the kind," cooly observed the chairman. "You had better go back tQ .Mastertou." he added, "We caunos(p moro than help the people in •our own district. However, for the night you shall have au order on the Salvation Army for a night's lodging." This was a 'manifestly unwelcome •suggestion, aud although the man took the order, he subsequently tore it up. "You are dispensers of public charity," he shouted, "uot your owu charity." Fragments of more argument were heard as the mau went down stairs, aud the words " reboundou yon," "main streets," could be heard growiug fainter aud fainter as the disappoiuted applicaut left the premises.
