SANITATION IN HEART OF MASTERTON.

[to the editor,

Sir, —A considerable time ago tho Borough Council enforced a by-law intended to compel all residents within the drainage area to oonnect with the sewers. Sundry folk who neglected to do this were dealt with accordingly. How, then, does ie happen that "Pharaoh's Chariot" is still froquently in evidence within the drainago area? And especially why does the said "chariot" come, about once a fortnight, to dispeuse perfumes in tho neighbourhood of St. Matthew's Church? On an early morning recently, I noticed it in front of the Fire Bell in Church-street, aud curiosity prompted mo to make enquiries. I ascertained that tho premises at the back, in tho heart of the town, are not conueoted with the sewerage system. The premises, I understand, are under the control of our City Fathers, as their-drays and horses are put up there. Surely this is a discreditable state of affairs iv a presumably up-to-date town like Mastertou. I trust our worthy Mayor will move in the matter, and tho sooner the better. —I am, otc., SANITAS. 16th December, 1907.
