The lirsl round of the Friendly Societies Cricket Competition was opened on Thursday by a match between tlu Foresters an! the Druids. The Foresters batted first anl put up the respectable score of 105, chiefly contributed by L. Bradstock With .'SB and Dr. Chadwick with 21, and in the second innings compiled 29 for ono wicket. The Druids in the first innings score! -10, Larsen with 12 being top scorer.

A moat enjojablc afternoon was spent, afternoon tea being dispensed by the Foresters. The match will be continued next Thursday.

A novel incident happened during the match. During the second innings of the Foresters, and whilst making a run, the matting blew up wit.i the wind and enveloped a player in its folds, which promptly caused that worthy brother to indulge in a series of acrobatic feats, and before he could recover the wicket he was run out. The local umpire decided that it was a case of " obstruction of the field," and declared the player " not out" and no runs to be scored, which decision gave general satisfaction. A match was fired between the Tararua Rifle Club and the Mounted Rifles oa the lalter's range on Thursday, the 7th December, resulting in a win for tiie visitors by 1-2-2 points. Following are the scores (seven shots at 200 and 500 yards) :--
