Sentence: was imposediaceordingly. ._ ■•■ The .accused received the sentenco with th_ comment "Thank you, your Worships, •you ought to go down with me."* A first offender ploaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness and was fined five shillings in-default twonty-fourhours' imprisonment. ■ ' CHARGE OP THEFT. - Patrick Murphy, otherwise known as Patrick Sullivan, was charged with stealing a watch from Jas. O'Reilly. The accused pleaded not guilty, but admitted that O'Reilly had given him the watch to sell; that he had sold it and spent the money. James O'Reilly, a stranger in town, said he had met tho accused the previous evening. He paid for his bed and gave him sixpence for a drink also. In the morning—both being without money—witness gave tho accused his watch to sell. He did not return, and an hour or two afterwards witness went to look for him, and found him " shouting " for some friends in the bar of an hotel. A Native, named Mani AVaaka, gave evidence that he had purchased the watch from accused for twenty-five shillings.

Constable Kyle gave evidence to the arrest of accused, who had no money when searched at the police station.

The accused, who admitted that the evidence given was true, was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment with hard labour.
