LAMBS FOR EXPORT.

Value ot Southdown Rams

A Practical Tribute.

At the A. and P. Association meeting, on Thursday, when replying to the remarks of the Chairman, in presenting the Garforth Challenge Cap, Mr J. Stuckey paid a tribute to the merits of Southdown rams for export. He stated that whereas a few years ago Southdowns were not very much in they were now recognised as the ram to breed lambs from long-woolled ewes. He referred to some figures (which had been supplied to him by Mr Clifton, Chief Sheep Inspector of the Auckland District) of an experiment which had been made at the Government Experimental Farm, in Waikato. A number of lambs were bred from cross ewes, Southdown, Tunis, English Leicester and Shropshire rams being used. The results were as follow : — LiveW'g't. Dressed. Fat. , Pelt. Southdown ... 97-J- 48} 51bs 3/Tunis ... 94 U} 4 : ;lbs 3/3 Leicester ... 102 43 : ; 3!lbs 2/10 Shropshire ... %l 42;; 2jibs 2/10 The lambs have been exported, but the returns from the Home market have not yet been received. The comparisons as shown above are distinctly in favour of the Southdowns.
