Strong efforts are being made to prevent the spread of ragwort in this district. Fines have been inflicted, with a threat of a substantial increase for failure to clear land.

There is indignation at the state of the Government stock paddock at Tiniroto, ■which is left a mass of rogwort. The seed is spread by travelling stock. : Mr W. D. Lysnar, Chairman of the Gisborne Farmers' Union, to-night telegraphed a strong protest to the Hon. J. Carroll, stating that the reserve had not been cleared as promised. It is stated that authority was given ;o the local inspector to put natives on to clear the land, but that it is useless to entrust it to them. Hamilton, Yesterday. The Premier, in a speech yesterday, said he was prepared to assist farmers and native landowners in the clearing of noxious weeds. __^___
