DALGETYS REVIEW.

An Up-to-date and Very Readable Magazine.

We have been favoured with a copy of " Dalgety's llsview " for August, ami find in it a largo amount of exceedingly interesting reading matter. It appears to be excellently compiled, and is a faithful record of matters connected with the pastoral and agricultural industries of Australia. But there is also a considerable quantity of diversified reading matter which goes to make "Dalgety's Review " fully equal to a modern magnzine. For instance , , there is an illustrated chapter on salmon and trout fishing in Scottish waters, tho illustrations depicting tho Iz.aak Waitonites in quest of the true salmon, for that fish offers the greatest sport and the truest prize. This is a particularly entertaining chapter, the illustrations being admirably reproduced. Then them is a chapter (No. IV.) under the heading "Explorers of Australia," which in these modern days has a special charm and interest of its own. There are references to Eyre's explorations on tho Australian Bight, describing the terrible sufferings which ho underwent; to Kennedy's disastrous expedition ; to Lsichhardt's, whose fato still remains an undiscovered mystery; to A. C. Gregory ; and to tho memorable but most disastrous Burko and Wills expedition. The chapter dealing with the working of grain elevators, and tho methods adopted (also illustrated), will bo an eye-opener to many colonists. Theie is ;\* very interesting chapter narrating the story of tea, its growth, cultivation, manufacture and transport,' the illustrations serving to convey an excellent idea of the subject matter of the letter-press. There are pictures of several types of stud sheep, ranging in price from 600 to 800 guineas. To look at the illustrations it is difficult to realise that the animals would be worth so much money. Three sheep reproduced in one illustration are valued at —in fact, they realised a total of 2.100 guineas. Cattle country is described in another part of the publication, the location chosen for the "descriptive letter press and illustrations being the Tenterfisld district —a great cattle grazing country —about. 500 miles from Sydney and at an elevation of nearly 8000 feet above tho level of the sea. The illustrations represent " A Mob of Tats" —a typical sketch, "Prize Bullocks on Bolivia Station," a group of Herefords owned by Mr S. Reynolds, Duninald ; also a pretty scene is Wilson's Creek, which a mob of cattle aro crossing. There is an admirably produced panoramic view of Buenos Ayres' docks and city, with smaller sketches of some falls on the border of Brazil, the Cordilbcra (Andes), some very handsome streets in Buenos Ayres, and the water-works buildings in the same city, etc. Tho " dairy notes " are well compiled, and convey much useful practical information. Then there is shipping, mining and commercial intelligence, a full description of the working ot a great daily newspaper such as the Sydney Muniuiy Herald, un obituary notice of the late Mr Thomas Brydone, a reference to Sydney's electric lighting plant, and. in political matters, the progress of the Federal Arbitration Bill. The Review is published by Dalgety an.i Co., and is excellent value for the publishing price—ninepence —as it is readable and entertaining (not even excepting the advertisements, which are most tastefully displayed) from cover to cover, and is a credit alike to its compilers and publishers.
