A fire broke out at 2.80 a.m. in Kelly's bootshop, and spread to Martin's (ironmonger) and Sloan's (furniture warehouse). Kelly's bootshop was destroyed, and the other two premises were burned out at the back. The stocks were much
damaged
The new high pressure water supply prevented the fire spreading through the most important block in the town.
