Major Yamaoka met the Russian chief of staff under a tl.ig of truce 500 metres north of Shoshiying on tho 16th. His offer included the safe conduct of women and children, under sixteen priests, diplomatists and officers of neutral Powers, who would bo conveyed to Dalny, where their baggage would be examined.
The terms of surrender included handing over all the Russian warships in tha harbour.
It is reported that when he heard the term?. General Stoessel burst into a storm of invective, but treated Major Yamaoka courteously.
He refused the Japanese request for three days' truce to bury the dead.
Major Yamaoka communic ited the Kaiser's request that Japan allow two German attaches to leave Tort Arthur.
