BUSH FIRES IN TARANAKI.

A Timely Downpour of Rain.

The Eltham paper, commenting on •the recent bush fires, says : —" The actual losses so far recorded are marvellously small, although more may be heard of. Had the heavy rainstorm not •broken out when it did we believe we •believe we should have had to chronicle a terrible record of homesteads destroyed by fire. One of the settlers said to us, ■' If the rain had not fallen there would have been no school, no hall, no creamery, and not a homestead left standing in the Riverlea district.' And this was no exaggeration. Even on Saturday night, the night after the fire, hundreds of trees were still alight on the tops, and a stranger driving along the Eltham-road would have thought that on the mountain side of the road he could see the lights of a large city."
