A SCHOOL FOR MANGARAMA

Purchase of Site Approved of.

The question so often raised of erecting a school at Mangarama, on the road between Pahiatua and Kaitawa, came before the Education Board on Thursday, it was explained that as the Government had provided money for the building, a school would have been erected long ago but that the owners of property at the junction of the roads, where a school was required, resolutely refused to sell. The Board having resolved to take the land, if necessary, under the Public Works Act, it appears that one of the owners was now prepared to dispose of two acres, at £20 per acre. Mr Hogg at once moved that the offer be accepted. Mr Buchanan asked whether the site was the best obtainable. He had been advised that the school was not required, being near Pahiatua, and if insisted upon it should be erected a mile or two further away. Mr Hogg and Mr Lee replied that the site was a good one; the distance was over two miles from Pahiatua, and the present school conducted in a little shed under most disadvantageous circumstances, was attended by a considerable number of young children, who could not be expected to travel to Pahiatua. The motion was carried,-and it was decided to erect the school forthwith.
