CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent,)

The attendance at our public school is far from satisfactory. With just about three hundred on the roll wo have been striking an average attendance of about 220. This must ultimately prove a great drawback to the children, who are so irregular, as well as being very discouraging to the teachers. A pipe drain from the Marquis of Normanby Hotel to the creek running down the main road has just re-placed a wooden drain which had become choked. From this, and other similar drains, all sorts of stuff naturally finds a way into the creek, which before it leaves the town must be well charged with microbes of every description. With this sewer running straight through the town, it is simply miraculous that we are not always suffering from an epidemic of typhoid, scarlet fever, and every other form of febrile complaint. Our salvation is, of course, the natural and remarkable healthiness of the site upon which the town is laid out.

The Revs. Ginger and Eaton, the newly appointed Methodist ministers for this circuit, are expected to arrive here during the course of next week.
