SIR REDVERS DULLER.
A Tribute to His Qualifications
A tributo ia paid to Sir Rcdvors JJullor by Lord Wolseloy in " Tho Story of a Soldier's Lil'o "—his lordship's autobiography published by Constable. Buller was o'no of tho men selected for special service by Wolseloy in tho Ashantee campaign of 1878-4. "Captain (now General) Sir Redvors Buller, of the Royal Rifles, was first and foremost as one whose stern determination of character nothing could rufilo, whoso resource in difficulty was not surpassed by anyone I ever knew. Endowed with a mind fruitful in expedients, cool and calm in tho face of every danger, ho inspired general confidence, and thoroughly deserved it. Had a thunderbolt burst" at his feet, ho would have merely brushed from his rifle jacket the earth it had thrown upon him without any break in tho sentence he happened to be uttering at the moment. He was a thorough soldier, a practised woodman, a skilful boatman in tho most terrifying of rapids, and a man of great physical strength and endurance." It will bo remembered that Buller showed wonderful nerve in the Zulu war in 1879. If he failed as Commander-in-Chief at the opening of the Boer war it was for the want of qualities of another kind.
