THE BETTING EVIL.
A Strong Appeal.
The Wanganui Chronicle writes as follows:—The ruination of true sport— the betting cvil —crops up continually, and it seems a great pity that some of our most healthy and popular outdoor pastimes should suffer by tbe pernicious action of a few people, who cannot allow any event to take place without introduring this element, and thereby creating discord amongst friendly rivals, and turning what should be healthy competition into wrangling matches. Locally, Jo a great extent, «c have been free from thiß evil, but from what can be gleaned in connection with a recent event, we are sorry to think that a footing is likely to be obtained which, if firmly set, will act as a big deterrent to a sport that should be heartily encouraged, and which has started under most auspicious circumstances. Therefore it behoves the offi cials to try their utmost to discourage to the fullest extent anything of the kind that comes under their notice. We are sure they will receive every encouragement from the great body of the public in their efforts to keep the sport pure and clean.
