DAIRY DEPARTMENT.

Dissatisfaction With the Appointment of Dairy Expert.

Tho appointment of a Danish dairy expert is giving great dissatisfaction in tho North Island, and questions are likely to be asked in the Houso as to whether he was appointed on the advice of the Secretary for Agriculture. It is alleged that Danish experts previously employed in the Dairying Department did not give satisfaction as instructors, and that on the retirement of Mr McEwan, the Government practically acknowledged this by refusing to pay a Danish expert tbe same salary as was paid to his predecessor, and that, in consequence, ho resigned. On tho other hand, it is pointed out that the three Canadian experts (Messrs McEwan, liuddick, and Kinsella) have given every satisfaction, and that tho dairymen throughout the country had every confidence in them, and that the quality of New Zealand butter has improved great'y under their supervision. It is further contended that thero are at presont in tho service men fully competent from whom a selection might be made for the position of Dairy Commissioner. During the past few days it has even been stated that in consequence of the latest appointment some of tbe nun now in the service will resign, but of this, so far as I can ascertain at present, there is no certainty.—Correspondent Hawke's Bay Herald.
