The Touring Team.

[by "the chitio."!

Owing to several of the Wairarapa team, which is touring the South Island and suffered defeat at the hands of Canterbury on Saturday, not having made an oversea voyage previously, their display in the initial match did not come as a very great surprise. Such a severe reverse, certainly, was not looked for any more than a win was. It is well-known that moro than half of those who were certain of selection couid not or would not make the journey, so that the football strength of the district is not nearly represented. The trip was undertaken to pay off an obligation to the Southern Unions and to players themselves, and although defeat stared the Union in the face, many drawbacks were overcome and set aside in order to play an honourable part. The Manager and his men will have a well-deserved holiday, and even if they do not score a single win, the experience the men will gain will be of good service to the younger players, from among whom we expect our future footballers. The Manager of the team, along with Mr Wakelin, late Secretary of the Union, can rightly claim credit for having such means at .the. disposal of the Union which enabled the team to make the tour. May Mr Bairstow' therefore enjoy a pleasant if not a successful time!
