Carterton v. Greytown.

Carterton Wins the Championship.

|by "the critic,"|

I attribute the defeat of the Greytown team, on Saturday, by nine to three, to the superior strength, not skill, of its opponents. The losers have equally as fine exponents of the game as Carterton, but the latter team comprises men of exceptional weight and staying powers. In common with Masterton enthusiasts, I offer my congratulations. Greytown was without the services of Raisen, Ahipene and Cowan. Honors were equally divided during the whole of the first spell, both sets of forwards putting in some splendid work, while the opposing backs were defending with great success. The second half was much in: Greytown's favour, but the team's attacking powers were weak, and consequently chances to score were thrown away. The home team only made one really dangerous onslaught on the Greytown chalk-line throughout the second half, and were rewarded with success—a try. Some very fine dribbling rushes were indulged in by McMinn, Johnston, Armstrong and A. Cadwallader, and were really a treat to watch.

TJdyandWorkman, for Greytown, made strenuous efforts to equalise the scores after Carterton took the lead; but, despite their brilliant work on the loose, their exertions were unavailing. Smart, Diamond and Johnston scored tries for the winners, none of which wore converted. Diamond and Liudop showed great improvement on past games. E. Workman and Macguire ably assisted Rogers, and performed well all through. Mr Alex. Campbell, the erstwhile Melrose captain, refereed on Saturday.
