Engineers all the world over are keeping I a spare e-ye on the Simplon Tunnel, which ' i 3 now more than three-quarters accomp-! lished. For them there is a point of special j interest, quite apart from the fact that this j will be the longest tunnel in the world. The point is that the two boring parties, which started work in different countries and with twelve and a half miles between them, will soon be within meeting distance. Already, for four years and more, they have been trying to join hands, literally in tho dark, but guided by the light of scientific calculation, and the question is, will they ever meet at all, and, if so, how nearly? If, as is expected, the two tubes meet one another and coincide within inches, after groping by scientific faith for so long a distance and so long a time, the result will be a triumph for the accuracy of practical mathematics.

The King's visit to Malta recalls an old and what is credited as a true story. Everyone knows the Armoury at Government house ; at each side of it are many euits of the old knights' armour standing life-like as if the gallant bodies that bore them ivero still inside the breastplate. It was noticed that on the occasion of a big ball the then Governor's daughter took particular care always to stand near one particular mailed suit between the dances. The climax came when she asked an old and confidential friend who was danciDg with her to get her a brandy-and-Eoda," here—quick," as no one was about. He promptly obeyed, and to his amazement saw the lady lift the dead knight's visor and hold up the refreshing draught to ihe opening. The secret was out. A young officer, whose attentions to the Governor's daughter had been the cause of his removal to an outlying fort had smuggled himself into the armoury in order to see his lady love.
