Action of Lime as a Manure.
One of the most important functions performed by lime when added to the soil is the effect which it has in rendering the humus or organic matter present more readily available for the use of the plants growing therein. By hastening the decomposition of this organic matter, lime reduces it to a condition in which the roots of tho plants can take it up and use it for tissue building purposes. It is tho action of the lime in this respect that renders that agent so effective as a dressing for peaty or boggy soils, in which the proportion of vegetable or organic matter is very considerable. And just as lime is so effective upon lands rich in vegetablo matter, so also it is seldom productive of much effect on land which is run down in condition, and in which the available supplies of organic matter aro limited.
