OUR ROAD-LESS COUNTRY SETTLERS.

It is every pleasing to hear from our subscribers in the country, and Mr W. Macnaughton, of Glenlcan, writes us to say that after some five long weary years of waiting, he is being at last rewarded in having the road to his homo completed. "I think this good result is attributable to a great extent to a letter which appeared in the Daily Times, last February, and the untiring energy of the member for Wairarapa—Mr Hornsby. To get to Mr Macnaughton's one has to go by way of Brancepcth and thence via Fernyhurst, the last two miles of road branching therefrom to his home, and for a long time was possibly ono of the worst of its class in the Colony; simply a sheep track, and a bad one at that." Iα three weeks' time," writes Mr Macnaughton, "I will enjoy a good road. Mr IS. Lcifchwick and party have been hard at work for a month past, and an *V outlet is near at hand. When ono is shut out from civilisation nine mouths out of twelve, little wonder at his being pleased in the matter of good road communication with a town liko Masterton. Borne settlors on the Coast here have ' been thirty years without roads. Wβ now can thank Mr Hornsby, as I myself do, as undoubtedly through his instrumentality we enjoy the great privilege of having anything like a decent outlet to our properties. In my case, the roadmen are to be complimented on the excellent work they are doing, clearly understanding what is expected of . and Boad-Inspector Harding will an easy duty to perform in passing it and the County will thereby benefit in the cheaper up-kcep thereof, being well made at first. The former letter re my road has, you see, done much good, and with others I am joyful in anticipation, and I must thank you for your share in the matter, and our member—Mr Hornsby—who has done all in his power to assist us in the way montioned," 'ft* The past (and present) experiences of residents of the backblocks, whoso homes are in remote and almost inaccessible districts, have gained for them universal sympathy. Wo congratulate Mr Macnaughton upon having at length obtained his long-awaited means of access to Mastorton.
