London, July 24. Tho fourth test match was commenced io-day at Manchester.
The weather was fine at starting, alihough it rainod during the night and in ihe early morning.
The wicket was slow at first, but easier as play progressed.
Tate, of Sussex, replaced Hirst, and Jones, Carter and Howell were omitted from the Australian team.
Darling won tho toss and sent in Trumper and Duff, the bowling being entrusted to Rhodes and Jackson. Nine runs were scored in the first two overs. Within twenty-fivo minutes the board showed forty-two, the result of splendid hitting. Tato replaced Jackson at fortynine. The half-century was hoisted at the end of twenty-seven minutes' play, the batting of both being excellent. Duff was keeping a slight lead of Trumper at sixty, when their respective records were Duff 31, Trumper 29. Braund went on in place of Rhodes. Trumper completed his half-century in fifty-two minutes, and had scored fifty-one to Duffs fortytwo, when the total was ninety-three. The century appeared within an .hour's play. At ninety-six Tate made way for Rhodes, but the change was unavailing, both bowlers being freely punished. At 119, Jackson was agp : n tried, the scores being: Trumper 66, Duff 52. At this point Braund made a great effort to catch Duff in the slips ; but the ball flew wide of the fieldsman, and fell. Lockwood supplanted Braund at 129. Six runs later Duff was smartly caught by Lilley off Lockwood. The partnership lasted less than eighty minutes, Duff for hie 54 playing a capital innings, which included four fourers; 1 for 135. Hill succeeded. 150 was obtained in ninety minutes. At 156 Rhodes went on, vice Jackson. The score at the luncheon adjournment was 173, Trumper being not out 103, Hill not out 14. Trumper compiled his century under one hundred and five minutes, and out of 168 he had compiled 100, which, being a record, was greeted with great applause.
