Tiw action of the Government with regard to the Saturday half holiday is characterised by their customary meanness. If a Saturday half holiday is in the best interests of the community it should be made compulsory by the party in power. If on the other hand it will embarrass trade and inconvenience both buyers and sellers it should lie abandoned. There is a contemptible middle, course by ■ which a Government ( may run with ihe hare and hunt with the hounds and that is to relegate the difficulty which they have not the courage to determine to local bodies. What have local bodies done that a responsibility of this hind should be thrust on them 1 -Why should the Government say to them, the settlement oi this question will necessarily he unpopular with either shop assistants, the public, or employers, we therefore put on you tbe onus of determining the Matter and on you must rest the blame which would otherwise be attaolied to us,
