Masterton C;C.v Tenui C.C,

The match between the above Clubs •barbi off on Mr J.' Vr Smith's land on .] : Saturday aftern6on.' '• This ftas' the 'first ; " match the Tenui irieh have" played' DUt of ( theii'owndistrict,' and tliey expectedfcinave- ! at least a hard fight, Mt.theysecured an easy victory—the Masterton team barely; escaping a one-innings defeat. As usual,' _ the latter Club were somewhat ' pared for. 'their opponents when the day came, liaving'to make up their number . from the field through all the picked team not having put in an appearance. In addition to this drawback they had not . had any previous practice. The Tenui team comprises some very good players, especially as regards batsmen, but they had the appearance of not having practisedmuch together," their fielding as a rule being rather loose. Their bowling was effective, several of the' team being good at this, Nicholls being about the best for swift and Gardener for slow bowling, Simpson and Chamberlain are also fair .bowlers but the latter is occasionally much off the wickets. The batsmen who "distinguished themselves on this occasion.were Elder of the Tenui team, who in the Ist innings made the splendid . score of 50, making two six-hits, a four, and several* threes, two, and singles, caught out-by- Briggs, -Simpson, who pntj together 13, and was sttmiped.by-D'Arcy;. arid Chamberlain with 10, caught by J." Williams. The bowling of D'Arcy and Meredith was pretty effective except in the case of the three mentioned above, all,the rest of the Tenui team only getting 19 off the bat. ; .

. The Masterton mon went to the wickets first, and were disposed of for the small total of 37, of which 12 were byes, the highest score being Green and Meredith, with 5 each, both bowled by Chamberlain. The Tenui team then wentinaud scored a total of 103,10 of which were byes, The Masterton fielding was not anything like what it should be, but they havo the lame excuse of want of practice. In the second innings the Masterton team were reinforced by the arrival of Messrs Hood and Moore, the fomiennakhig the top score for Masterton, 10, bowled by Gardener; Meredith coming next with 15, caught and bowled by Gardener; Hare, not out, 14, In this innings the batting was very much superior to that in the first,'.and a score of 91 was well put together, which, added to their first score made a grand total of 128, the Tenui men having to make 21 to win. J3y this time it wanted but half an hour to drawing stumps, so the Masterton men took the field immediately, l Messrs Boileau and Elder at the wickets, The former .was dismissed after making ,8, Elder having made 7, Chamberlain took Boileau's place, and was run put without adding to the score. Gardener then went hi, and there ■ was, spnip little excitement, manifested as the time grew short, as the Tenui men wished to play the match out in preference to letting it be decided on the first Inninws. Gardener had succeeded in putting together 4. and Elder 12, when tlio former made the winning.hit r nnkina the total of 21, one being a bye. -The Tenui team' thus won ivitli two men at the wickets not out, and seven more to go, jn. At the conclusion of the g.-ime three cheers were given for the Tenui men and acknowledged' by a'-similar compliment From-them to their late opponents, the teams then leaving the field in Neil and Cookery's 'bus, There were a few visitors to the liyld dnriii" the game, among theiii being several of the fnji spx. ■• Thefoiloivingaie llioseurus i-3 .
