POLAR EXPLORATION
A GERMAN EXPEDITION. Per Press Association— -Copy rich* LONDON, January 2. Tlae German Government is constructing an airship for an expedition, six times the size of the Italia., equipped with wireless, and capable of cairying 3-5 men, wi*i German leaders. Fifteen scientists, with special instruments will take special soundings from the airship. Oceanography, fish and plant life will be studied. LONDON, January 1. Sir Douglas Mawson’s forthcoming journey to England is definitely in connection with an Antarctic expedition. Moreover, there is every possibility that he will secure Captain Scott’s Discovery.
British Government officials have little to say in that connection, but it was admitted to-day that certain negotiations have been going on.
It is understood that these are a continuance of those of many months ago, when it was first indicated that Sir Douglas Mawson desired to arrange an expedition. The position seems to have been carried considerably further, though whether or to what extent Mr Bruce is backing the mission has not been revealed in London. It is kno-wn that Sir Douglas Mawson desires a certain sum, which some people a few' months ago apparently were not optimistic about raising.
