Mr J. A. Hurst (University of Otago) son of Mr and Mrs R. B. Hurst, Naylor Street, has been awarded a senior scholarship in geology.

The death of Mr E. Veitch was sympathetically referred to at the annual meeting of the Southern Football Club, by the president (Mr R. Clear). Mr Clear said that Mr Veitch was the keenest supporter of football that Waimate ever had, and he had spent considerable time in training players. The president stated that at the funeral of Mr Veitch, the Southern Club had attended almost to a man. He moved that the valuable services of the deceased to the Club be placed on record. The motion was carried, members standing. • * • • *

The complete number required for the Borough Council is now attained in the nomination to-day of Cr. Atwill and Mr A. Kirby. This is probably the earliest date at winch a complete council has been nominated for many years. The very excellent state of the roads and finances of the Borough and the pleasure attending membership of successful public body may be responsible for the unusual readiness of citizens to become candidates. If any other residents desire membership of the Council they will Lave to attain their desire through a competition in a Municipal election .

After saying no to many requests to allow his nomination for a seat on the Borough Council, Mr Arthur Kirby, the well-known builder, has at length consented. The deputation which last night waited on Mr Kirby pressed the need of men with their life interest fixed in Waimate taking up a share m the town management. Mr Kirby was born in Waimate and has only been absent for the war period, when he was for three years on service, and saw tfie end of the campaign in France, and served beyond the Rhine in the Allied occupation of Germany. In local matters Mr Kirby is Arch Chief of the Druids Lodge and has ten years’ service as a bandsman to his credit. He also holds a seat on the local United Friendly Societies’ Council. For twenty years the new candidate has been known in building circles, and is the ’ owner of properties in Belt Street. It is a pleasure to see our boys coming forward in their manhood to shoulder the responai bilities of full citizenship.

Mrs A. R. Manchester and Miss Doris Manchester were hostesses at a “cup and saucer afternoon” held at “Te Ra,” in honour of Miss Gertrude d’Auvergne, whose marriage to Mr A. Richards is to take place this month. During the afternoon Miss Mona Melton sang, Miss Eileen Dailey recited, and Miss Rosa Creemer contributed pianoforte solps.
