The Waimate Caledonian Society, along with many other sports bodies, were not kindly treated by the clerk of the weather in the matter of climatic conditions for their annual sports gathering to have been held on Boxing Day. Since the. inception of the Waimate gathering local people have always looked forward to it with the keenest enthusiasm. The Society has experienced some lean years, but of recent years there appears to have been a revival of sport, and for the Boxing Day meeting competitors from places some distance away, as Christchurch Oamaru, etc., entered, making this year’s entries as good as ever. The surrounding districts were also well represented. However, the weather on Christmas Night gave no indications of an improvement by the room ing, and when the Directors met early on Boxing morning to eosider whether or not the sports should be held, the rain was then coming down so heavily that it was deemed inadvisable to hold the fixture and the sports were accordingly arranged for to-day. It was rather un lucky that the decision «had to be ar rived at early in the morning, as later in the day the weather cleared, there were many intending sportsgoers in the town. Early this morn ing the weather looked anything but promising, but as the day progressed the clouds disappeared, and Old Sol for a time sent his glad rays down upon the sodden earth. A light wind helped greatly to improve the conditions underfoot, with the result that there was a fair attendance at the meeting. The long programme of splendidly arranged events was got off punctually and in a manner affording satisfaction to the competitors and pleasure to the spectators. The directors of the Society are to be congratulated on the complete arrangements and the efficient manner in which they discharged their multifarious duties, which culminated in a successful day’s sport. Considering the great amount of rain that has fallen over the holiday period the cycling and running tracks were in excellent, condition. The Waimate cycling track is one of the best in South Canterbury and the competitors are invariably satisfied with the conditions, which probably accounts for the good entries. The Silver Band rendered an appreciable musical programme, and the Pipe Band also livened up the proceedings throughout the day.
