TO-NIGHT ONLY! “WHITE SLIPPERS” STAHR-ING MATHESON LANG. —British Production.— An io'.d sailor, tempest-tossed and battered, was rescued from the sea by Lionel Hazard, a young Englishman seeking adventure. Before dying, the old man gave his rescuer a chart indicating the existence of an immense treasure ill the Southern Seas. Hazard struck a bargain with the captain o+ a barque and of a motley band of contrabanders. Two years of fruitless search led them to Porto del Rey, where, in a cantina, Hazard wion a pair of white slippers. Seeking the owner, he was directed to Jan English girl, whose beauty en- ! slaved him. To free her from bondage he again set out for the treas ure, braving the perils of the port I and defeating efforts of villains who tried to rob him. When he returned with the gold and jewels he learned that Alice, the girl he Loved was wife of the proprietor of the cantina. On board the ship he fought Guitterez for the girl, while the crew fought to retain the treas- ! ure. Hazard won the girl and sailed home with the gold and jewels. MONDAY and TUESDAY. LAURA LA PLANTE IN—"HER BIG NIGHT.” Laura La Plante has become a real motion picture star. Her popularity has become so great among film fans of the work during the past two years that the Universal company has decided that she has earned the right to join the ‘ star” class. Her first real starring role—the first of a series of such picturesl—- — to the Arcadia theatre Monday and Tuesday when "Her Big Night ’ starts its engagement here. As most of her pictures have been, "Her Big Night” is a farce comedy, and provides a role very well suited to the talent of the pretty, blonde comedienne. With the exception of “The Midnight Sun,” the big super-jewel production in which she played the lead, Miss La Plante has done nothing but light comedy roles for the past two years. She played opposite Reginald Denny in “Skinner’s Dress Suit,” and shared honors with Edward Everett- Horton ir “Poker Faces.” She established her ability as a comedienne in her earlier pictures, including “The Teaser,” with Pat O Malley, "Dangerous Innocence ' with Eugene O Brien, and “The Fast Worker” with Denny. Little more than two years ago, Miss La Plante was virtually un known to the screen. She started her picture career with leads in comedies and westerns. “Her Big Night” was directed by Melville Brown, from his own adaptation of Peggy Gaddis’ magazine story, '‘Doubling for Daphne.” The cast supporting Miss La Plante ineludes Einar Hansen, Tully Marshall, Zasu Pitts, Mack Swain, Lee Moran, John Roche, Cissy Fitzgerald, Nat Carr, William Austin and others.
