FORESTRY LEAGUE

INTERESTING EXHIBIT AT THE SHOW. The Waimate branch of the Forestry League had a very interesting exhibit on view- at the Waimate Show on Tuesday last. Mr F. H. Grace, of the State Forestry Service, Christchurch, brought down a collection of various timbers sawn from Canterbury grown trees, some shovel handles, a hub of a cart wheel, and an excellent butter box made from black poplar wood. The samples of wood comprised all the well known sorts, pinus radiata, silver pine, oak, laburnum, redwood (semper virens), and many others. Altogether, there were about fiftysamples. Mr H. B. S. Johnstone, the enterprising president of the local branch, had a very fine collection of trees in pots, and visitors were able to make themselves acquainted » with the various kinds of eucalpti, etc., with the aid of the officials in charge of the tent. Foliage of various trees was also shown, each being labelled and hung up in view. A few of these were cedrus deodora, eedrus Atlantica, sequoia sempre virens (redwood), sequoia gigantia (Wellingtonia), thus showing the different types of the various families.

Air B. F .Whitney exhibited some fine specimens of locally grown blue gum timber, 3xl battens suitable for gates, etc.; 2 x 2 dray framing; and 4xl planks. All these were of very hard wood and free from any warping. The tijees from which these were sawn were planted in 1878. A much admired exhibit from the same owner was an Bxl Wellingtonia board, and an 8 x 1 plank, the bright, red colour of the wood attracting much attention. Throughout the day a stream of visitors kept coming and going, there being present some people from as far away as Fairlie. Many inquiries were - made regarding the various kinds of eucalypti, and with the aid of the various pamphlets supplied by the Department growers were able to find which suited their different locttliities. The A. and P. Association is deserving of a word of praise for the assistance it has given the League in the matter, and also Air Grace, for the excellent exhibits, as a great bulk of the Department’s collection had been sent to the Dunedin Exhibition.
