Per Pres* Association—Copyright. GISBORNE, March 22. At the Supreme Court, George William W right, found guilty on two charges of maiming a horse, was sentenced to four years’ reformative treatment. The judge stated that the case was one of revolting cruelty. The prisoner had made a practice of torturing and maiming dumb animals. For two years past a number of mares were found dead in the Whakatane and Opotiki districts under mysterious circumstances, and the Judge had no doubt that accused was responsible for the death of these animals. Since the trial the skeletons of nine mares have been found in a gully near where he was living. WELLINGTON, March 22.
From time to time reference is made ib the congestion in certain of the mental hospitals of the Dominion, and it is hoped at an early date, that the position will be improved very considerably. “We have a big building programme ahead,’’ stated the Hon. Sir Maui Pomare to-day. It was intended also to relieve the congestion at some of the institutions by transferring certain classes of cases to the hospital at Tokaanui, in the middle of the North Island, when that new place was ready. By carrying out this policy of transfers, the pressure on other institutions would lie relieved, and existing hospitals would not have to be enlarged unduly. More accommodation was also going to commence the work authorised at nile patients were sent. The Minister stated that Cabinet had approved an expenditure of over £lO,OOO in carrying out extensions at Hanmor, for the treatment of neurasthenic and nervous cases. It is hoped to be provided at Nelson, where juveHanmer very shortly.
