SHEEP DOG TRIALS.

WAIMATE CLUB. ; A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The weather was ideal for the Waimate Sheep Dog Trials. Record entries, totalling 120,. were received for the three events. Mr M. L. Elliot officiated as judge in his usual capable manner. The dogs worked well in the long pull and huntaway events but in the “shout” pull a good many sheep were missed owing to their being liberated too near the top of the face, the slope being so narrow that the sheep went too quickly out of sight. The Club, being unable to obtain a caterer, those attending were obliged to go into town, but as it wag only a matter of a couple of miles, no difficulty was experienced in this respect, patrons being driven into town at intervals by motor car. The officials, however, were well catered for by Mrs and the Misses Judge, whose kindness was greatly appreciated. Thanks are‘ due to Mr J. W. Hayes, for the loan of sheep and also to Mr E. C. Studholme on whose property the trials took place and to whose untiring efforts the sue cess of the function is largely attributable. The flagmen ahd time stewards included many new men this year, but they worked most efficiently. . Mr T. Hamilton, the popular president, kept his weather eye on things in general; and the energetic secretary, Mr B. F. Whitney, assisted to put the programme through with despatch.

Bustle east to right, went out on good line, but* stopped before he headed. He started again, and made a good head in 2min 30sec; lifted well and pulled well to the flat. He let the sheep too far to the right; but his work at the yard was good. The man and dog worked quietly, and the command was good. He yarded in llmin 50see.

Mackenzie’s Kep hunted on the left, going out freely. He headed out of. sight, and shouldered on the right rather much; but liis work at the yard was good, the dog standing well to the sheep and yarding. Dixon’s Kep cast to the left, going away too wide; but he came in and made a good head. He made two dives when, starting out to the left, breaking off one of the sheep. He got it back to the other two, however, and made a fair pull to the yard, and succeeded in yarding in 8.40. The command was fairly good.

Kennedy’s YVee, McGregor went out to the right on a good line. He made a good head, and pulled well on a fair line. He failed, however, to yard, although he did good work in the attempt. The command was good. R. Trotter’s Mons cast to the left. He went a little wide, but made a fair head. He was out of sight most of the time. He pulled well on a fair line to the yard, but the sheep were wild, and he could not yard them. The command Was good. A. Mcßae’s Roy east to the left, and headed nicely. He pulled fairly, but with a good deal of barking; and, although successful in yarding his sheep, the work at the yard was only fail-. The command at the -yard was indifferent, although it was better outside.

B. F. Whitney’s Northope Dirk east to the left, going out on a good line. H e took his directions well, and headed in good style, although rather close. He pulled rather slowly, but preserved a good line to the'yard. One sheep showed an inclination to stick the dog up. The command was good.
