PROBLEM SOLVED. (Per Press Association—Copyright). Sydney, this day. The Lord Mayor announced that owing to the prompt action by the Government the problem of the unemployed had been practically solved The City Council was absorbing a number of the men and suburban councils were employing residents in their own districts where practicable. Soldiers were given preference in employment, then married men and single men last. BUSINESS MEN’S PLEDGE. POLITICS TABOO. A representative meeting of business men pledged themselves to take immediate action to secure regular employment of all fit returned soldiers, and fitting work for maimed men. They appointed a working committee which subscribed £lOOO to provide sustenance for the needy soldiers, while employment is being secured. The Lord Mayor promptly suppressed an attempt to utilise the meeting for political purposes. WORK FOR EX-SOLDIERS. LONDON, May 18. The Government has appointed a Parliamentary Committee to report upon the systems adopted by other countries to provide employment for disabled ex-servicemen.
