WAI HAO FORKS SALE. (By Our Special Reporter)? At Waihao Forks sale yesterday there was a fair yarding of fats and a rather small yarding of stores, both lines meeting with a ready market. NEW ZEALAND DAIRY OUTPUT. .82.2 PER CENT FROM NORTH ISLAND. Some interesting figures, not hitherto published, showing the extent to which dairying is carried on. in New Zealand, were used by Mr T. C. Brash, secretary of the National Dairy Association, in addressing a recent meeting of representatives of dairy companies of Marlborough, at which the proposed compulsory pool of dairy produce was unanimously approved.

Mr Brash stated that- for th e year ending 31st March last, New Zealand’s output of butter-fat, as represented by the butter and cheese graded, was 58,403 tons. Of this, Auckland contributed 23,659 tons, or 40.5 per cent; Taranaki 12,954 tons; or 22.2 per cent; Wellington (including Wanganui), 9439 tons, or 16.1 per cent; Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland 1851 tons, or 3.3 per cent. This showed that the North Island, with the inclusion of Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland, produced 85.5 of the total output. The figures for the South Island were:—Canterbury 2672 tons, or 4.5 per cent; Otago 1862 tons, or 3.2 per cent; and Southland 3986 tons, or 6.8 per cent Putting Nelson, Marlborough and Westland in their proper geographical positions, the North Island produces 82.2 per cent of the total output, and the South Island the remaining 17.8 per cent. For the twelve months ended 31st March, New Zealand’s exports of dairy produce were valued at £8,885820 for butter and £7,615, 254 for cheese.
