NOTES AND COMMENTS. Coalition is doing good work at Trentham, and will leave this week for Wanganui. Albert Cling is gradually recovering from his injuries, and the brilliant son of Young McKinney is in the best of spirits out in the paddock, but it is rather early yet to speculate on his prospects of again appearing on the race track. A notable absentee from the Dunedin entries i s Sunny Loeh. Probably the Sunny Lake gelding is to receive a short let-up, and then be prepared for the Wellington and Rieearton winter fixtures. The performances of Kato, the Egmont double winner, must have impressed the handicapper, as there is only 21b s between him and General Raven at Waiganui. There was two stone and a half on the first day at Egmont. Although she failed to get into the money, the Waimate mar e went two stinging good races at Forbury, covering th e two miles in 4.29 on the first day. The other Waimate representative, Vilo, forfeited her engagements, having contracted a severe cold during her successful trip to Christchurch. The most notable difference in the handicaps for - the Wanganui and Great Northern Steeplechases is in the ease of Sturdee, who has 10.6 at Wanganui, and 9.5 at Auckland. Last winter Sturdee won the Park Steeplechase at Napier and the June Steeplechase at Hastings. His only appearances this season were at Kiearton, where he was unplaced in the Grand National with 9.13 to Coalition’s 12.7, and won the Lincoln Steeplechase with 10.7. Mr B allance’s gelding appears to be kindly treated with 9.5 in the Great

Northern. The Advance gelding is a seasoned performer. The season before last he won twiee at Hawke’s Bay and ran first and second at Trentham.

A very poor lot of steeplechasers for the Dunedin Joekey Club’s 1000 sovs are included in the list of entries, which closed on Friday. The two North Islanders, Kato and Juan, appear to be the pick of the basket, with Master Hamilton and Zarkoma representing those on this side of the Strait.

Acording to a Sydney writer an offer of £17,000 for Eurythmic for stud purposes came from the Argentine.

The three-year-old filly Furious, the most prominent classic winner in Australia this season, has amassed a respectable sum in stake-money to date, and is now fourth among the list of great stake-winners among the mares in New Zealand and Australia. The list is headed by Desert Gold, and then follow in order, Carlita and Wakeful. It is worthy of note that the latter did not make her appearanpe on the Turf till s he was a four-year-old, and consequently was deprived of the opportunity of earning any of th e rich stakes provided for two and three year olds. Following is a list of mares that have won stakes in excess of £10,000:--Desert Gold £23,133; Carlita £17,830 Wakeful £16,690; Furious £16,155; Gladsome £10,712; Sister Olive £lO,. 341; Warstep £10,190.
