BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The waimat- Borough Council met last night. Present: The; Mayor (Mr F. Nash), and Cour-1 cillors W ,E. Evtins, R. Nicol, R. < lear, W G. Paul, K. Childs, I D. A. Fulion, J. Morrison, and ~ W. Collett. The Chief Inspector of Explosives wrote pointing out that the preparaton of bv-laws were expensive and suggesting a general by-law to cover the storage of explosives and danger us goods. On the motion of Cr. Evans, it was suggested that the bv-law should be abopted The Technical Classes Association wrote regarding their subsidy. The Council decided to make the us- , ua Igrant of £5. The tender of H. Jackson for plas- ( tering at the septic tank at • the rate 1 of 8d per square yard (labour only) was accepted. ,

Mesrs Middleton and Tweedy wrote on behalf of Michael Hogan claiming compensation for the period during which he was out of work as the result of a horse treading on his foot.

The Mayor stated that Messrs Horgan Bros, had been employed to cart shingle under the contract system. ome discussion took place regarding the insurance, the Mayor pointing out that accident insurance was paid according to the wages sheet, which hardly apply in the case in question. It was finally decided to consult the Borough Solicitor in the matter.

Messrs Meyers and Jones were granted permission to remove a corrugated'iron shed from Innes Street to a section at the rear of Green and Co.’s premises in Queen Street. Building permits were granted to A. McLeod and B. Betten *

At the suggestion of Cr. Evans, it was decided to have the remains of a signpost erected across the f dotpath in High Street by Mr H. Broadhead, removed, Mr Evans stating that only the post remained, and pedestrians frequently collided with it at nights. With regard to the fixation of the water charge for the residence of the Clerk of the Court, it was mentioned byacouniillor that the house went rate free ,being in the same position as the Police Station. This point was debated; and it was eventually agreed to consult the Municipal solicitor in the matter. Cr. Nicol remarked upon a house at Timaru which was unrateable as it had been bought for a postal office, and was held to belong to the Crown. Accounts were passed for payment as follow: Sewerage, £346 14s Id.; general, £32 10s; Gas Co.. 19/6.
